One in four workers 'fears for their job'
A survey released today by Philadelphia-based job placement agency Right Management Consultancy (RMC) revealed dramatic levels of anxiety over unemployment among workers in seven of seventeen countries surveyed. Over one in four US and British workers surveyed expressed fear that they will lose their jobs sometime in the next year, while just under one in four workers in Hong Kong and approximately one in five workers in Australia, Canada, Japan and Switzerland expressed similar fears. The results of the survey reflect what the United Nations' International Labor Office has characterized has a worsening "world employment situation" (see WIT for Jan. 24, 2003), and revealed that even Italian workers confident in keeping their jobs fear their employment prospects if laid off.
