Apartment Building Workers Threaten to Strike
28,000 members of Local 32B-J of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) employed as janitors, doormen, superintendents, and other workers at 3,000 New York City apartment buildings plan to strike next week if a bargaining impasse continues. The members of SEIU 32B-J last walked out in 1991---remaining on strikes for twelve days---and are seeking to improve wages and reduce co-payments on medical visits in the current round pf bargaining. The Realty Advisory Board that represents the building owners continues to insist on a contract containing three years of wage freezes, one-time-only payments of $500 in only the second and third years of the contract, and increased medical visit co-payments.
