Judge gives mechanics' local more time
Even as the Association of Professional Flight Attendants became the last of three major unions to approve renegotiated concessions with American Airlines following the collapse of initial agreements (see yesterday's WIT), a challenge was already being voiced. Following approval of the initial concessions agreements by the Transport Workers Union, TWU Local 562 representing American Airlines mechanics in New York filed a request for a revote in US Federal Court alleging a flawed and unrepresentative vote (see WIT for April 16, 2003). While the TWU national leadership has argued that a revote is not required, and American Airlines has said it will implement the agreements as planned this Thursday, a federal judge granted the local's request for additional time to evaluate the new agreements and pursue its challenge.
