Democrats unveil immigration plan
Democrats have answered Bush?s proposal for immigration reform with a plan that would import guest workers and legalize most of the nation's 8 million to 10 million undocumented immigrants. Under the plan undocumented immigrants would be eligible for legal status if they had resided in the United States for five years and could provide proof of employment for 24 months and other immigrants already in the country could become eligible by working for two years. Although it is unlikely that the bill will pass, Democrats are hoping that it will put political pressure on Bush given the upcoming election.
