Medical Miscalculation Creates Doctor Shortage
According to an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine, predictions in the 1990s about a glut of physicians have not come to fruition, and the country will soon be facing a shortage of doctors. The Council on Graduate Medical Education is now recommending to Congress that 3,000 more doctors a year need to be trained in U.S. medical schools in order to meet future demand, and the American Medical Association has abandoned its long-standing positions regarding oversupply of doctors. Others question whether the issue is really oversupply or if the problem is poor distribution throughout the United States.
