Report Emphasizes Shortfall in Medicare
Two members of the Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees report that since 2000, the financial condition of Social Security has changed little. In contrast, Medicare?s situation, due in part to rising medical costs and the addition of a prescription drug benefit, has dramatically deteriorated and is now much worse than Social Security?s. The trustees predict that the Social Security trust fund will be exhausted by 2041 and Medicare?s trust fund will run out by 2020.
