G.M. and Union Are Said to Make Progress in Talks
A United Auto Workers representative says that talks are going well between the union and G.M., who is looking to possibly resturcture pensions. G.M. and its largest labor union are having unusual talks this summer in Detroit, two years ahead of the expiration of its contract. One of G.M.'s greatest challenges, along with the fact that it cannot sell enough vehicles at profitable prices, is that its labor force is shrinking while its retiree population swells.
