For Now, No Strike by Northwest Machinists
The largest union at Northwest Airlines said yesterday that it would vote on a contract proposed by the company, scuttling the threat of a strike for now. Northwest, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy-court protection in September, has been seeking $190 million in pay and benefit reductions from the machinists' union as part of an effort to cut $1.4 billion in labor expenses and stem losses.
