Chirac to Announce Decision on Jobs Law
French President Jacques Chirac will likely enact a divisive new labor law despite huge, sometimes violent, demonstrations against the measure that makes it easier to fire young workers. On Thursday, a council of experts ruled the law constitutional, leaving Chirac with a decision as to whether he should enact the law. The law's most contested provision would allow a two-year trial period for workers under 26, during which companies could fire them for no reason.
