At Boeing, the company is currently producing 20 percent more planes than it did during its last big production boom in the 1990s. However, Boeing has been able to maintain this level of production with only two thirds of the number of workers as a result of robotics and outsourcing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that 6 million manufacturing jobs in the U.S. were lost between 2000 and 2009 as a result of automation and outsourcing.
