How Scalia's Death May Save Teachers Unions -- For Now
In California, it was expected that Justice Scalia would vote against a union in the case of Friedrichs vs. California Teachers Assn. With the passing of Scalia, it is expected that this vote will result in a 4-4 split. In this case, a woman along with nine others claim that they were forced to pay union fees even thought they elected to not join the union. The union argued that it had a right to collect fees from these teachers because they benefitted from the contract negotiations the union engaged in.
