Minimum-Wage Hikes Hit Hiring In California, Arkansas
Nationwide, only 2 in 5 states dealt with employment losses in January, however among the states who increased their minimum wage by at least 50 cents, 7 of 8 experienced a loss. Particularly striking were the losses in California, a state which had seen continuous gains in employment for 54 months straight. While the connection between wage hikes and loss of jobs is circumstantial, this data may be something to keep an eye on moving forward.
