Petition Says Close Shops on Boxing Day to Spare Workers
Retail Workers in the U.K. are petitioning for stores to be closed on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas. The petition, currently backed by 100,000, requires 150,000 signatures to submit to Prime Minister Theresa May. Workers are asking employers to respect Boxing Day as an extension of observance for workers celebrating Christmas, as well as an opportunity for all employees to be allowed to relax with their families. Although many stores downplayed their Black Friday sales last year, Patrick O’Brien, an analyst at Verdict Retail, believes that companies will not be able to look past the importance of Boxing Day in the retail calendar.
