Lufthansa makes new wage offer to striking pilots
After cancelling approximately 4,500 flights since last week, Lufthansa has offered a new wage contract to its pilots. The German airline also discarded its plans to tie wage increases to increased hours. The new offer includes a 4.4% wage increase split between 2016 and 2017, as well as a $1.8m one-off payment. Union Vereinigung Cockpit had demanded 5 years worth of backdated pay increases of 3.7%. The strikes have cost the airline $10-15 million euros per day. Lufthansa has struggled as cheaper airlines like Ryanair continue to gain market share.
