Player Strike Lays Bare Soccer Crisis in Messi's Argentina
After months of unpaid salaries, the Argentine Soccer Players Union announced that its players are going on strike. The soccer season was set to begin on February 3rd, but has been delayed because of the salary crisis. The union has called upon the Argentine Football Association to ensure that clubs pay their players. Yesterday, Argentina's president, Mauricio Macri, announced that the government would pay 350 million pesos to cover the clubs' debts, a figure that the clubs argue is too low.
