AFT Considers Contesting Election Results After Alleged Code of Conduct Violations
The American Federation of Teachers, affiliated with CGSU, stated Wednesday that it may contest the unionization election results on the basis of alleged labor law violations committed by Cornell’s administration. The alleged violations of the code of conduct that had been agreed upon by Cornell and CGSU include emails sent during the voting process. One email sent by the University noted that money used for increased benefits for graduate students could mean fewer graduate students at the University. Other emails claimed that CGSU/AFT/NYSUT representatives asked eligible voters opposed to unionization not to vote, and that the school would decrease healthcare costs on its own next year. The AAA should decide the status of the challenge votes, and therefore the result of the election, within the month.
