Union asks state to halt rebranding of Chicago airport cops as security
Yesterday, the Chicago airport police officer’s union requested that a push to reclassify the police officers as members of a security force be stopped. Chicago’s Aviation officers are certified police officers trained by the Chicago Police Academy. The Aviation Department framed their intended security force rebranding as a “reinforc[ement]” of the current policies aimed to clarify that aviation security officers do not have the same authority as Chicago Police officers. The nature of airport security has precipitated as an issue following United Airlines’ removal of a passenger by force on April 9.
