Drug crisis hits the workplace and beyond
A recent report from Quest Diagnostics Inc., a workplace-testing lab, has found that American workers are testing positive for drugs at a higher incidence now than any other point in the past 12 years. Drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and heroin were all detected at increased rates across almost all testing populations. Employers are choosing to deal with the issue in different ways; in industries dealing with transportation, such as the airline or trucking industry, a zero-tolerance policy is enforced because impaired workers have the potential to put many others at risk. In other industries where low employee turnover is crucial, more relaxed drug policies are being considered.
