Should Hawaii Guarantee Every Resident A Minimum Income?
In response to increased job loss from automation and technology, the Hawaii Legislature issued a resolution calling for more research into implementing a universal basic income. The sponsor of the measure, Representative Chris Lee, has cited examples such as Airbnb, Uber, IBM Watson, and self-checkout lines to illustrate how technology has disrupted the service job market, drawing parallels to automation in the manufacturing sector. In Hawaii, due to the high cost of living, people often work multiple service jobs; it is unclear to what extent the loss of service jobs will impact these people. Hawaii is the first state to consider guaranteeing a universal income for all residents.
