Teamsters Tell Big Pharma Shareholders: Vote No on Boss’ Bonus
The Teamsters have directly called on McKesson Corp. shareholders to vote against giving Chief Executive John Hammergren a $1.1 million bonus. Union members, who live in some of the states hit hardest by America’s growing opioid crisis, have accused McKesson of fueling the opioid epidemic by failing to report suspicious orders of oxycodone and hydrocodone. This comes just three years after the NLRB ruling that McKesson, America’s largest pharmaceutical wholesaler, was guilty of plotting to decertify a Teamsters local. This year, McKesson paid a $150 million fine to the government that resulted in Congressional investigations into the pharmaceuticals industry. The Teamsters union argues that it is unwise to reward Hammergren after being forced to pay a record fine to the DEA. Although it is too late to withhold the monetary bonus from the CEO, Teamsters members hope that shareholders will reconsider the way top executives are paid and pass a vote of no confidence in Hammergren’s leadership.
