Thailand aims to be free of illegal workers by next year
The Labor Minister of Thailand has announced plans to legalize the status of all illegal migrant laborers by next year. This follows the launch of 101 centers to give millions of migrant workers the proper documentation to work legally in the country, in compliance with an executive decree aiming to impose harsh punishments on employers who knowingly continue to hire undocumented laborers. To obtain legal working status, workers must be able to confirm they have employment, and prove their identity. Thus far, most centers have serviced employers from small businesses, as larger corporations may need time to get their paperwork in order. This is the last lenient period for employers to register illegal migrant workers without facing the legal consequences.
