Employers concerned about diminished labor pool with DACA phaseout
Given President Trump’s recent decision to discontinue DACA, an immigration policy that allows undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. as minors to receive deferred action from deportation and to apply for work permits, employers in the San Diego area, known for its large undocumented population, are increasingly worried about how this will eliminate a critical portion of their potential employees. In addition to general concerns about a shrinking labor pool, employers are even more troubled about what this policy change could mean for efforts in many companies to diversify their staff as the phasing out of DACA disproportionately affects young undocumented people of color. With nearly three-quarters of the top 25 Fortune 500 companies employing DACA recipients, one cannot deny the growing role of immigrants in the domestic economy and the Trump administration’s actions may have detrimental consequences for not only DACA recipients but also corporate America.
