Four student unions demand dialogue with Chinese University officials in six-hour stand-off over Hong Kong independence posters
Members of Chinese student unions in various universities throughout Hong Kong have recently run into conflict with university administrators and law enforcement through expressing their support for Hong Kong’s independence from mainland China. At Chinese University, severe tension dominated the campus as supporters of Hong Kong’s independence fought with dissenters for space in public areas to put up posters voicing their respective views. Following Chinese University’s Chief Executive’s statement that these posters went beyond freedom of speech and violated the law through attempting to undermine the Chinese government’s sovereignty, members of four student unions from four difference campuses charged into the student affairs office to demand that their speech be protected and that the administration not remove their posters. Escalating hostility between mainland and Hong Kong students has led to concern over where this conflict will lead.
