CP Railway Union Discussions Near Deadline as Labor Strike Looms
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Teamsters Canada are threatening to go on strike and disrupt Canada’s second largest railroad for the second time in three years if they cannot reach an agreement with Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. by the end of the day. Negotiations were still underway this afternoon, despite a looming 12:01 am strike deadline. The unions represent more than 3,000 electrical workers, train conductors, and engineers working for railway company. CEO Keith Creel took a strong stance on Wednesday, saying that he refuses to sacrifice long-run profit and has contingency plans in place if the workers decide to walk off. Teamsters Canada has already filed a complaint against Canadian Pacific, alleging systematic bullying and forcing employees to work grueling shifts. Canadian Labor Minister Patty Hajdu weighed in on Thursday, saying that she expects the parties to stay at the negotiating table until a resolution is reached, and that she will continue to closely monitor the situation.
