Labor Union Groups in Costa Rica Go on Strike this Wednesday
A coalition of labor unions in Costa Rica went on strike Wednesday. The workers are protesting a new fiscal plan that is currently being discussed in the Legislative Assembly. Members of the National Insurance Institute, the Social Security Authority, and public education unions are participating in the strike, among others. Their position is that the proposed fiscal plan should be thrown out in order to have a more substantive discussion about the root of the fiscal problem. They say public workers are not the people who caused the crisis, and should not be made to pay through cuts to their benefits packages. The unions took to the streets of San Jose at 9 am this morning.
