Graduate students stage eight-hour sit-in urging officials to recognize labor union
Graduate students at George Washington University held an eight hour sit-in on Thursday morning for the second time in two weeks. GW Graduate Students United members delivered a letter to the school’s president and provost at 9:30 requesting that they agree to hold a third-party election that would allow the students to establish a collective bargaining unit. The unionization efforts began last fall in response to low pay and poor health care plans. More than 20 students participated in the first hour-long sit in two weeks ago, which prompted Provost Forrest Maltzman to meet with leaders of the graduate students union. Maltzman reportedly walked out of the meeting early, causing more than 50 students to protest outside of Rice Hall earlier in the month. Both the Student Association and the GW Faculty association have expressed support for the unionization drive.
