Umpires balk at widened background checks
Baseball umpires are up in arms over an attempt by Major League Baseball to expand background checks into its umpires in response to the NBA refereeing scandal. The World Umpires Association, which represents the 70 major league umpires, ordered members to refuse to sign a consent form sent out giving the league permission to perform extensive background checks. Officials for the WUA stated they would only agree to the background checks if Major League Baseball agreed to add a seventh umpire to its World Series roster, a demand league officials denounced as "trading economics for integrity".
