Cabbies? Group Vows a 2-Day Protest Strike
A group that says it represents about 7,000 cabdrivers vowed yesterday to go ahead with a two-day strike this week, just as New York City emerges from its summer slumber. Just how big ? and disruptive ? the strike could be, though, remained an open question. City officials expressed skepticism that a telling number of the drivers of the city?s 13,180 medallion taxis would participate in the work stoppage, scheduled to start at 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Still, they said, the city is prepared to deal with a strike, though they would not elaborate on their contingency plans.
