The AFL-CIO and its affiliates in the San Francisco area filed suit Wednesday to block new immigration rules set forth by the Bush administration that would force employers to fire illegal workers. The union charged that faulty government record keeping used in the enforcement of the new rules would result in the firing of a large number of legal immigrants and U.S. citizens. The new system, set to take effect Tuesday, would match Social Security numbers given to employers by new hires with those in the Social Security database. Union officials, however, charge that because name changes resulting from marriage and divorce are not being taken into account, clerical errors will be rampant, creating discrepancies that cannot be resolved within the 90 day limit enforced by the new rules.
