Chrysler Workers Narrowly Voting for Pact
The new contract between the United Automobile Workers union and Chrysler is passing by a slim margin, despite votes against it at six major factories, according to figures compiled today. Through Sunday, a tally of available results by The New York Times indicated that about 53 percent had voted in favor of the deal, with 47 percent voting against. A person with direct knowledge of the figures, who spoke on condition on anonymity, confirmed the estimate today. About 41 percent of Chrysler?s 45,000 workers have voted on the agreement thus far. The tally was based on figures made public by individual union locals, and in some cases, on estimates from percentages provided by the locals.
