Players union ready to discuss tougher drug rules
In response to George Mitchell's recommendations to Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig to strengthen baseball's drug program, the players union announced it will meet with owners to discuss ways to clean up the sport. The union was cautious however, to emphasize the talks did not signal a re-opening of MLB's current drug agreement with the players, only a discussion on the ideas and recommendations in Mitchell's report. Over 80 current or former baseball players were named in the report, which focuses mostly on the years before players and owners agreed to ban steroids outright in September 2002.
