Powerful South Korean labor group calls strike
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, a labor group over 600,000 strong, announced Tuesday it would hold a one-day strike next month to protest South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's economic reform proposals. The group, which represent Hyunda Motor and other workers, is protesting a proposal which would privatize state-run firms, cut corporate taxes and reform pensions, in addition to Lee's decision to resume importing U.S. beef. Government officials have called the strikes "illegal" and have vowed to "handle them in accordance with the principles of law and order".
