U.S. investigates L.A.-based union?s election
Tyrone Freeman, the president of L.A. Service Employees International Union local 434B, is already facing an investigation over his questionable spending habits. Now he is also being investigated over his election. Several union members, with the help of labor attorney Arthur Fox, have challenged Freeman?s election, contending that it was impossible for anyone else to even run. Candidates were required to collect 4,800 signatures in three weeks in order to get their names on the ballot. Many felt that this was asking the impossible, and therefore ensuring the election of all incumbent officers, including Freeman. A local labor professor believes that SEIU president Andy Stern may have to place the local under trusteeship and remove Freeman, despite his success in organizing and consolidating workers.
