Working: Sweet Harmony
The American Rights at Work Education fund recently published its pre-Labor Day list of 10 successful employee/employer interactions. Featured highly on the list was the Washington National Opera, which had seen two strikes in the last 15 years. The fund suggested that a labor-management committee and strong contracts made the recent turnaround possible for the Opera. An Opera director, Christina Scheppelmann, said that ?nonprofits face tough issues so it makes sense?to work together. Ultimately, we?re in the same boat.? Also featured on the list were Alabama Power, Justice Clothing (which is totally unionized, and sweatshop-free), and the State of Kansas.
