Governor vetoes ag worker union bill
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed an assembly bill that he claimed would give unions too much control over the distributing and collecting of secret union ballots for farm workers. The legislation would have allowed farmers to complete absentee ballots, and the United Farm Workers asserted the bill would guarantee better organizing prospects. Many businesses supported to veto, claiming the proposal could have jeopardized the secret ballot process required by California farm labor law.
