France Braces for Disruptions as Unions Call for General Strike
Labor unions in France have called for a general strike, set to begin on January 29 and meant to put pressure on the French government in light of increasing unemployment. Eight labor unions have joined the movement, including the two largest unions in France. Subways, trains, and air travel are all expected to be disrupted, while many public schools and government offices could likely close completely. The effort appears to have the backing of the general public; an estimated 69% support the cause according to a French newspaper survey. French unemployment is expected to reach 9.8% this year.
