Former secretary of Labor, Ray Marshall, ruled on a dispute between the United Healthcare Workers union and its parent union, the Service Employees International Union, yesterday. SEIU alleged that UHW had stashed funds to battle its parent, disguising the investment as a non-profit to be used for health education. The unions have disagreed for the past year over SEIU's decision to merge workers in each state into one local, spurring the allegations. While Marshall determined that UHW's fund had been mismanaged, he did not order trusteeship; rather he encouraged the union to cooperate with its parent. While the outcome was unanimously approved by SEIU's executive board, UHW has not yet accepted nor rejected Marshall's recommendations or conditions.
