Mediaset, TI Media Hurt as News Unions Scupper Cuts
The influence and strength of the Italian reporters' unions has thwarted journalist layoffs in Italian media companies. Telecom Italia Media SpA, for example, is losing money but nonetheless discarded plans to cut 25 journalists, joining several other Italian publishers who are holding back on payroll cuts. Employers are apparently wary of downsizing because of the potential impacts of such a move on union relations, and the possibility of strikes. But the effect of saving jobs is also costly, as slumping advertisement revenues put media companies all over the world in financial trouble.
