Union in Dispute Over Layoffs
The union representing the Service Employees International Union's field staff members levelled charges of unfair labor practices against the nation's fastest-growing and most influential union after the SEIU announced the layoff of 75 employees. The charges, which include firing employees without proper notice, restricting union activities, and hiring temporary staff to thin union ranks, are many of the same business practices which the SEIU is known to rail against, and come at a time when the SEIU is trying to lobby the Employee Free Choice Act into passage in Congress. SEIU officials say the layoffs are part of an effort to reallocate resources to its Washington, DC office in a attempt to capitalize on President Barack Obama's election.
