City Tries to Protect Jobs of Preschool Bus Drivers
New York City's Education Department is working to guarantee some unionized school bus drivers their jobs by requiring companies that win future busing contracts to hire drivers from companies which previously held contracts with the city. The measure, which centers on preschool bus drivers, is part of a city effort to avert a possible strike by drivers over job guarantees. City bus companies are protesting the move, however, arguing that the measure unfairly forces them to hire more expensive union drivers, driving their businesses' costs up.
