Bronx Bakery Owner Is Charged With Cheating Workers
The owner of an Italian bakery, Walter Galiano, in the Bronx was arrested yesterday for mistreating workers. Galiano apparently paid workers less than the minimum wage ? withholding more than $350,000 in pay ? and threatened to fire some workers after officials began investigating. He was also arraigned for insurance and tax fraud. The investigation was prompted by an anonymous worker tip, and began in 2007. Since then, several employees made and later retracted statements regarding the matter, and many employees left after threats from Galiano, or lost their jobs as a result of the investigation. Galiano faces up to four years in prison.
