GM Designates 14 Plants for Closing
GM, which officially filed for Chapter 11 protection Monday morning, also announced that it will close 14 of its plants in advance of its reinvention. 7 of the plants to be closed are in Michigan; other states to be affected include Tennessee, Ohio, and Delaware. The closings will affect approximately 18,000 workers, a significant proportion of the 22,000 GM has said it must let go by 2011. Additionally, 3 parts warehouses will be closed, and two plants will be placed on stand-by, ready to re-open if demand increases, or to transition to producing subcompact vehicles. The cuts and closings were met by anger, sadness, and resignation on the part of the UAW. President Ron Gettelfinger says that the sacrifice to get to this point has been tremendous, and hopes that the reconstituted GM will be able to become profitable once again.
