Union anger over staff shadowing
The Public and Commercial Services union in the UK has expressed anger over a decision by the British Council to outsource a number of jobs. The council says it is under great pressure to reduce costs and as such will be expanding some operations overseas. The council currently operates 5 centers across the globe, but will compact operations into two: one in India and one in the UK. About 500 positions in the UK will be lost, as well as 200 overseas. 80 finance positions will be cut, be 60 new office jobs will be created in India. As part of the outsourcing strategy, the Council has scheduled a number of India workers to shadow employees at the British office. The union is not happy with this decision, saying that being shadowed by Indian workers who will most likely be taking their jobs will be very disconcerting for the British employees.
