City cop union enters fray over prof arrest in Cambridge
The Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 3, has joined in the national debate over the arrest of an African-American professor in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Professor Gates was arrested in his home after a neighbor called the cops reporting a supposed robbery. The robbery was in fact Gates himself, who broke into his own home after locking himself out. Officer James Crowley arrived and arrested Gates after a dispute arose over whether or not he was actually the homeowner. The arrest has sparked debate across the country, and criticism from President Obama. Baltimore FOP president Robert Cherry joined in Thursday , issuing an official statement that said the arrest seemed more like a misunderstanding than a racially motivated incident and that Officer Crowley was just doing his job. Cherry does not believe Obama should have ?interfered? in the local arrest.
