Unions back cuts protest action
Attendees at a Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Liverpool, England today urged the British government to keep spending levels up, saying that panic measures could make the recession even worse. The unions, as well as a number of government officials have warned that cutting public spending would "damage" vital services and "impair" recovery. The TUC unanimously approved a motion that opposes cuts or redundancy measures in UK public services. The motion further asked for already cut jobs to be re-instated, no pay cuts, a corporate "payback tax," and an end to privatization of public services. On the other side of the issue, Conservative party members are encouraging the government to begin making public service cuts immediately in an effort to address the budget deficit.
