LA Unified plans to fire more non-tenured teachers than usual
The Los Angeles Unified School District has announced that it will let 110 probationary (or non-tenured) teachers go this year, almost three times as many as have been fired in the last few years (an average of 35 teachers have been fired annually since 2005). The LA Times reported in December that the district had a tendency to grant probationary teachers permanent or tenured status with little or no evaluation - less than a week later the superintendent had ordered closer supervision of all teachers, and probationary teachers in particular. Additionally, over 200 other teachers have been given a mediocre evaluation and could still face firing in the summer or the next year. The 110 already up for layoff will be voted on at the end of the school year, sometime between March and June.
