Greek Unions Call Strike Over Pensions, Stepping Up Protests
The two largest Greek unions have announced another general strike for May 20. The General Confederation of Labor and the Civil Servants Supreme Administrative Council, which together represent around 2.5 million Greek workers, are protesting a proposed law that would raise the retirement age and reduce pensions. The new law is in response to conditions set by the EU and IMF in return for $144 billion in loans. The Greek Prime Minister has said that they need the money and the reforms go with that. The announcement of the new strike comes after demonstrations against the austerity measures grew violent and three people were killed.
