Settlement ends strike by Shaw?s workers
After more than four months of striking, warehouse workers for Shaw's Supermarkets reached a deal over wages and health benefits. Workers rejected a previous deal that they said would have cost about $1,456 a year for those in family health insurance plans. A Shaw spokeswoman said that the four-year contract includes wage increases and more contributions to health insurance, and that the economics were close to the previous offer. Workers have been escalating their efforts against the company, and gained the support of politicians and other unions, who urged Shaw to negotiate. Workers will be gradually phased back in over the next few weeks.
