Kaiser employees can vote on union
Kaiser Permanente employees on the West Coast will vote on union representation starting September 13. The vote will be between the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West, the current union; the National Union of Healthcare Workers or no union at all. Around 43,000 employees are eligible to vote, and many are watching the outcome for a signal for other health care workers on the West Coast. The SEIU-UHW is the largest health car union on the West Coast, and if the NUHW wins, it will signal that the new union is viable. The NUHW announced that 48 shop stewards from one hospital were resigning their positions from the SEIU-UHW and supporting NUHW. Kaiser has said that it is neutral in the vote. The vote will be conducted through mail-in ballots starting on September 13 and ending on October 4.
