State workers triumph in suit
An administration law judge ruled that Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm violated labor law by rescinding a 3% raise promised to 15,000 nonunion state employees in 2007. The deal mirrored that of the union employees, whose pay raise took effect on Friday. The employees are not allowed to form formal bargaining unions, but typically negotiate consensus agreements which often mirror union agreements. A representative for the workers said that the ruling helps to bolster the case of the workers as they continue to fight for the pay increase. An appeal by the state will go to the civil service Employment Relations Board. The legislature, which has to power to revoke the raise, could not muster the votes needed earlier this year.
